100 Years at the South Pole

December and January are the 100th anniversary of the human conquest of the South Pole.  The incredible treks of the Amundsen and Scott parties.  Roald Amundsen and his group reached the South Pole on 14 December 1911 with Robert Falcon Scott’s party arriving more than a month later.  After 100 years things have changed dramatically in Antarctica.  We now have major scientific research stations in Antarctica, including a new one at The South Pole.  This station is aptly named The Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station.  Here is a picture of our friend, Erik when he visited the geographic South Pole.

While we in the Northern hemisphere celebrate the shortest day of the year, our companions in the south have 24 hours of daylight!  Cheers to all those explorers, scientists and support staff working in the Antarctic.
